How to form the Passive-form

The Passive Form is used to describe an action from the perspective of the person receiving it.

⚫️ Group 1

Change the “i” sound before ~masu to an “a” sound and add “re-ru“.

i ます → a れる
– i masu → – a reru

あいます なきます さわぎます おします たちます しにます えらびます たのみます しかります ai-masu naki-masu sawagi-masu oshi-masu tachi-masu shini-masu erabi-masu tanomi-masu shikari-masu

あわれる なかれる さわがれる おされる たたれる しなれる えらばれる たのまれる しかられる awa–reru naka–reru sawaga–reru osa–reru tata–reru shina–reru eraba–reru tanoma–reru shikara–reru

⚫️ Group 2

Replace “~masu” with “ra-re-ru“.

ます → られる
masu → rareru

たべます たすけます すてます しめます tabe-masu tasuke-masu sute-masu shime-masu

たべられる たすけられる すてられる しめられる tabe-rareru tasuke-rareru sute-rareru shime-rareru

⚫️ Group 3

きます します しょうかい します ki-masu shi-masu shōkai shi-masu

こられる される しょうかい される korareru sareru shōkai sareru

⚫️ Conjugation

The Passive-form itself conjugates as “Group 2 Verb”.
