Grammar Note

The Nai-form is used to express the negative. The conjugation rules depend on the verb group.

⚫️ Group 1

Look at the syllable before ~masu and change the “-i” sound to the “-a” sound, then add “nai“.

i ますa ない
– i masu → – a nai

note: If the stem ends in the vowel “i (い)”, change it to “wa(わ)” instead of “a (あ)”.

⚫️ Group 2

This group is the simplest. Just remove “masu” and add “nai“.

ますない
masu → nai
