Grammar Note

How to form the Ta-form

The Ta-form is the casual past tense of Japanese verbs, used to say what happened in the past.

⚫️ Group 1

The ending changes based on the last syllable of the stem:

  • いちり → った (i・chi・ri → tta)
  • にびみ → んだ (ni・bi・mi → nda)
  • き → いた (ki → ita)
  • ぎ → いだ (gi → ida)
  • し → した (shi → shita)

Irregular

⚫️ Group 2

Just replace “~masu” with “~ta“:

ます → た
masu → ta

⚫️ Group 3
