How to form the Volitional-form

The Volitional Form is the casual version of “~mashou”, used to say “Let’s” or to express one’s intentions.

⚫️ Group 1

Change the “i” sound before ~masu to an “o” sound and add “u“.

i ます → o う
– i masu → – ō

うたいます いきます およぎます さがします たちます しにます あそびます やすみます はしります 　utai-masu iki-masu oyogi-masu sagashi-masu tachi-masu shini-masu asobi-masu yasumi-masu hashiri-masu

うたおう いこう およごう さがそう たとう しのう あそぼう やすもう はしろう utaō ikō oyogō sagasō tatō shinō asobō yasumō hashirō

⚫️ Group 2

Replace “~masu” with “~yō“.

ます → よう
masu → yō

はじめます しらべます きます おります hajime-masu shirabe-masu ki-masu ori-masu

はじめよう しらべよう きよう おりよう hajime-yō shirabe-yō ki-yō ori-yō

⚫️ Group 3

きます します かいもの します さんぽ します 　ki-masu shi-masu kaimono shi-masu sanpo shi-masu

こよう しよう かいもの しよう さんぽ しよう koyō shiyō kaimono shiyō sanpo shiyō
