meaning : whenVerbる-とき ⑴、Verbます ⑵
when ( = before ) ⑴, ⑵
The action of “Verb ⑵” is completed, before ( or as the same time as ) the action of “Verb ⑴”

hikōki [ni] noru-toki, nimotsu [o] azuke-masu.
( I check in luggage before I get on a plane. )
sūpā [e] iku-toki, tanaka-san [ni] ai-mashita.
( I met Mr.Tanaka on the way to a supermarket. )

meaning : whenVerbた-とき ⑴、Verbます ⑵
when ( = after ) ⑴, ⑵
After the action of “Verb ⑴” is completed, “Verb ⑵” happens.

hikōki [ni] notta-toki, sono eiga [o] mi-mashita.
( I watched the movie on the airplane. )
kaze [o] hīta-toki, shōga [o] tabe-masu.
( When I catch a cold, I eat a ginger. )

( when I was a child )
