⚫️「… 。」と
meaning : Direct SpeechWhat someone has said is put in a Japanese quotation mark “「 」”, and a particle “と” follows.
It is a way that you repeat exactly someone’s word.
kanojo [wa] ‘watashi [wa] samu-kunaidesu.’ [to] ī-mashita.
( She said “I’m not cold”. )
⚫️ Plain-form と
meaning : Indirect SpeechYou quote what someone said.
Compared to “direct speech”, it’s not a way that you repeat exactly someone’s word.
kanojo [wa] watashi [wa] samu-kunai [to] ī-mashita.
( She said that she wasn’t cold. )
Indirect Speech
sono onnanoko [wa] inu [ga] suki-da [to] ī-mashita.
( The girl said that she likes dogs. )
Direct Speech
sono onnanoko [wa] ‘watashi [wa] inu [ga] suki-desu.’ [to] ī-mashita.
( The girl said, “I like dogs”. )
Plain-form と
⚫️ Verb Dictionary-form ように (と)
meaning : ( to tell ) what someone should doIt is used to tell something that someone should do or must do.
okāsan [wa] kodomo [ni] gēmu [o] shinai-yōni ī-mashita.
( The mother told her children not to play games. )
“と” can be added to “ように”.
okāsan [wa] kodomo [ni] gēmu [o] shinai-yōni [to] ī-mashita.
( The mother told her children not to play games. )
The following verbs are often used.
