Verb ます ませんか？ ( 1 )

meaning : Would you like to do … ?

This is an expression to invite someone to do something together; this is a way of saying that you care about someone’s feeling politely.

“いっしょに ( = together )” is often used together.

いっしょに スーパーへ いきませんか？
isshoni sūpā [e] iki-masenka?
( Would you like to go to a supermarket with me? )

Please be careful that “Verbたいですか？( want to do )” sounds impolite, so you’d better not to say in the formal situation.

つぎの かいぎまで じかんが ありますので、コーヒーを のみませんか ？
tsugi [no] kaigi [made] jikan [ga] ari-masu-node, kōhī [o] nomi-masenka?
( We have some more time until the next meeting, so would you like to drink coffee? )

[NO]つぎの かいぎまで じかんが ありますので、コーヒーを のみたいですか？

The way to answer of “yes” is “Verbましょう”.

A : いっしょに しんじゅくへ いきませんか？
　　isshoni shinjuku [e] iki-masenka
　　( Would you like to go to Shinjuku with me? )

B : いいですね。いきましょう。
　　 ī-desu [ne]. iki-mashō.
　　( Sounds good. I’d love to go. )

meaning : Why don’t you do ?

“Verbませんか” is also used to make a suggestion to someone.

わたしの ともだちの カフェで アルバイト しませんか？
watashi [no] tomodachi [no] kafe [de] arubaito shi-masenka?
( Why don’t you work part-time at my friend’s cafe? )

Verb ます ましょうか？ ( 1 )

meaning : Shall I do ?

It is used to suggest to do something together.

じゅうにじです。もう ねましょうか。
jūni-ji-desu. mō ne-mashōka.
( It’s 12 o’clock. Shall we go to bed now? )

If you don’t know someone’s feeling, it is more polite to say “Verbませんか”.

こんどの にちようび たなかさんと えいがに いきます。もりさんも いきませんか？
kondo [no] nichiyōbi tanaka-san [to] eiga [ni] iki-masu. mori-san [mo] iki-masenka ?
( I’m going to go to the movie on next Sunday. Would you like to go with us? )

[NO]こんどの にちようび たなかさんと えいがに いきます。もりさんも いきましょうか？

“Verbましょうか” can not be used when you suggest something that you don’t do together.

わたしの ともだちの カフェで アルバイト しませんか？
watashi [no] tomodachi [no] kafe [de] arubaito shi-masenka ?
( Why don’t you work part-time at my friend’s cafe? )

[NO]わたしの ともだちの カフェで アルバイト しましょうか？

meaning : Shall I do … ?

It is used to offer to do something for other people.

まどを あけましょうか？
mado [o] ake-mashōka?
( Shall I open the window? )

Let’s say in Japanese !

A : Would you like to go shopping with me?
B : Sounds good. I’d love to go.

B : いいですね。いきましょう。
