Grammar Note

⚫️ A makes B to do

Causative Form is used when “A” forces “B” do something or “A” instructs “B” to do something. Usually “A” is a person who is higher in rank more than “B”.

Causative sentence with intransitive verbs
A person who is forced to do ( = “B” ) is marked by a particle ““.

おかあさんは こどもたち じゅくへ いかせました
okāsan [wa] kodomotachi [o] juku [e] i-kase-mashita.
( The mother made her kids to go to a cram school. )

Causative sentence with transitive verbs
A person who is forced to do ( = “B” ) is marked by a particle ““.

せんせいは がくせい ほん よませました
sensei [wa] gakusi [ni] hon [o] yo-mase-mashita.
( The teacher mede the students read books. )

Causative Form is also used when “A” allows / permits “B” to do something or “A” lets “B’ do something.

Causative sentence with intransitiveverbs

コーチは せんしゅ やすませました
kōchi [wa] senshu [o] yasu-mase-mashita.
( The coach let the players take a rest. )

おとうさんは こども ひとりで いかせました
otōsan [wa] kodomo [o] hitori [de] i-kase-mashita.
( The father allowed his child to go alone. )

Causative sentence with transitive verbs

もりさんは たなかさん かいぎを はじめさせました
mori-san [wa] tanaka-san [ni] kaigi [o] hajime-sase-mashita.
( Mr. Mori let Ms.Tanaka start the meeting. )

おとうさんは むすこ ナイフを つかわせました
otōsan [wa] musuko [ni] naifu [o] tsuka-wase-mashita.
( The father permitted his son to use a knife. )

⚫️ Causative Form ていただけませんか?

meaning : Can you please allow me to do … ?

You ask politely if someone will allow your action.

at work you ask your boss …

らいしゅう ははが にほんに くるので、しごとを やすませていただけませんか
raishū [wa] haha [ga] nihon [ni] kuru-node, shigoto [o] yasu-masete-itadake-masenka?
( My mother is coming Japan next week, so can you allow me to take day off from work? )

at a restaurant you ask the stuff …

ここに スーツケースを おかせていただけませんか
koko [ni] sūtsukēsu [o] o-kasete-itadake-masenka?
( Can you please allow me if I put my suitcase here? )

けいたいでんわを じゅうでん させていただけませんか
