How to form the Potential-form

The Potential-form is used to express ability or possibility (e.g., “I can read Kanji”).

⚫️ Group 1

Change the sound before ~masu to the “-e” sound and add “ru“.

i ます → e る
– i masu → – e ru

つかいます あるきます およぎます なおします もちます しにます はこびます やすみます のります tsukai-masu aruki-masu oyogi-masu naoshi-masu mochi-masu shini-masu hakobi-masu yasumi-masu nori-masu

つかえる あるける およげる なおせる もてる しねる はこべる やすめる のれる tsukae–ru aruke–ru oyoge–ru naose–ru mote–ru shine–ru hakobe–ru yasume–ru nore–ru

⚫️ Group 2

Just remove “masu” and add “ra-re-ru“.

ます → られる
masu → rareru

こたえます かんがえます ねます おきます 　kotae-masu kangae-masu ne-masu oki-masu

こたえられる かんがえられる ねられる おきられる kotae-rareru kangae-rareru ne-rareru oki-rareru

⚫️ Group 3

きます します れんしゅう します りゅうがく します ki-masu shi-masu renshū shi-masu ryūgaku shi-masu

こられる できる れんしゅう できる りゅうがく できる korareru dekiru renshū dekiru ryūgaku dekiru

⚫️ Conjugation

The Potential-form itself conjugates as “Group 2 Verb”.
