How to form the Prohibitive-form

The Prohibitive Form is used to strictly forbid someone from doing something or to give strong “Don’t do” commands.

⚫️ Group 1

Change the “i” sound before ~masu back to the “u” sound (Dictionary-form) and add “na“.

i ます → u な
– i masu → – u na

つかいます いきます およぎます さがします たちます しにます あそびます やすみます はしります tsukai-masu iki-masu oyogi-masu sagashi-masu tachi-masu shini-masu asobi-masu yasumi-masu hashiri-masu

つかうな いくな およぐな さがすな たつな しぬな あそぶな やすむな はしるな tsukau–na iku–na oyogu–na sagasu–na tatsu–na shinu–na asobu–na yasumu–na hashiru–na

⚫️ Group 2

Replace “~masu” with “~ru-na“.

ます → るな
masu → runa

わすれます こたえます かります wasure-masu kotae-masu kari-masu

わすれるな こたえるな かりるな 　wasure-runa kotae-runa kari-runa

⚫️ Group 3

きます します そうだん します ki-masu shi-masu sōdan shi-masu

くるな するな そうだん するな kuruna suruna sōdan suruna
